I just got word of the grand opening of the Mayne Stage (formerly the former Morse Theater), 1328 W. Morse. On Thursday 6/3, "The Best is Yet to Come" an evening of cabaret featuring area resident Beckie Menzie, Tom Michael, Joan Curto, Paul Marinaro and Sue Conway will be the first of a series of Preview shows. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Other upcoming preview shows include singer Jan James, psychic entertainer Ross Johnson, and blues artist Liz Mandville.

For tickets to Preview Events, visit the box office, or to order online. Use the discount code ROGERS PARK to get your tickets for a special price of $5.00.

Mayne Stage opens officially on Thursday 6/17 with The Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. Visit the box office or to order tickets online.

The casual Act One Cafe is NOW OPEN at 1330 W. Morse. I'm curious to check it out. The menu focuses on New American food with locally sourced ingredients. The bar features a wide selection of handcrafted beers, interesting wines and signature drinks. Weekend brunch buffet begins in early June.

Valet parking is available. Dinner is served from 5:00 until 10:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. To make a reservation, call 773-381-4550.

I hope this new business is a successful addition to the neighborhood.

Wisdom Bridge roof collapse

This news from Joe Moore's e-mail last night:

The roof of the building that once housed the Wisdom Bridge Theater at 1559-61 W. Howard collapsed this afternoon (Wednesday). Part of the front facade also collapsed, sending debris onto the front sidewalk. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

An emergency demolition crew is on the scene, and the entire building should be demolished by tomorrow (Thursday). The building has been vacant and in foreclosure, and the City recently obtained an emergency court order to demolish the building after experts determined it was no longer safe. The demolition was scheduled to take place in the next two to three weeks.

As you might recall, developer Richard Aronson has proposed a 7-story mixed-use building for the Wisdom Bridge site and the property immediately to the east. Several community meetings were held, and I announced earlier this week my support for the development proposal. Mr. Aronson reached an agreement with the bank foreclosing on the property to purchase the property after the foreclosure is completed. When the purchase takes place, the city will be reimbursed for the cost of the demolition.

neighborhood walk tonight

An invitation from Toni Duncan of beat 2422:

The weather forecast may include rain, but beat 2422 neighbors will be meeting at 7 PM at 1610 W. Howard, Willye White Community Center to start a new summer and a new tradition. If you don't care for the walks, please join a new group to play board games with youngsters in the park tonight while others walk and do some positive loitering. One neighbor has volunteered to watch the game tables. Sharon
O'Connell, the park supervisor has offered tables, chairs, etc. to use. In the event of rain, the event may be held inside.

Last year in the Uptown neighborhood, neighbors set up card tables near a park and began spending time with the youngsters there. Soon, there were hot dogs being grilled and it became a weekly tradition many kids and adults looked forward to. If you would please call a neighbor or forward this email it would be great to see and meet neighbors from every block in Beat 2422. If you have a board game you'd like to share, please bring it. If you have ideas for the gatherings and walks, let's discuss them tonight!

Our canine neighbors are also invited to join on the walks. We have some 'regulars' who have joined for several years now!
