Starry starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
pick up garbage along the way

Shadows on the lake
sketch the pot holes as we take
notes of buildings that forsake
code violations that will be in court

Rogers Park Garden Group meeting 8/26

This month's presentation will be Keeping Your Trees Terrific with John Eskandari, Plant Acquisitions Manager, Tree & Shrub Dept., Gethsemane Garden Center. We rely on trees for beauty, shade, and multiseasonal interest in any green space from a garden to a terrace. Colorful bark, mosaic-like exfoliation, bud colors and overall structure are important interests to consider when choosing a tree - even for a pot. Now, how do you care for it? Last year's popular speaker and certified arborist, John Eskandari, returns to talk about all things arbor: the overall health of woody plants, winter protection and moisture, fall feeding, what to do in the spring, and much more. There will be a raffle drawing for a copy of The Trees in My Forest by Bernd Heinrich.

The meeting will be held at RP Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Room, 7059 N. Greenview, 7 p.m. For more information, click here.

caring for trees and planting new ones

Have you ever seen neglected trees in local parks and forest preserves and wished you could do something to help them? Or have you seen open spaces that really need some trees and wanted to plant some? Are you interested in habitat restoration in local forests and prairie preserves? Treekeepers could offer you an opportunity to help.

There's a new 7-week session of classes starting 9/12 at Humboldt Park. If you're interesting in the fall class session, check out the brochure here.

a local film you should see

If you didn't catch "The Merry Gentleman" when it opened in commercial theaters in spring, it's playing at Beverly Arts Center tonight and Saturday at 7:30 pm.

Michael Keaton expresses more with eyes and body language than with words. The exquisitely subtle cinematography adds to the mood and complexity as the story develops. It was entirely filmed on location in Chicago (including interiors), and not in all the usual places. This independent film (also Michael Keaton's directorial debut) is a refreshing change from mainstream Hollywood flicks.

It was a fairly full house for last night's showing, followed by a Q&A with the executive producer and a couple of the actors. Check it out. If you don't make the trek to 111th St. to see it on the big screen, watch for the video. It's well worth seeing.
