a bit of injustice

After reading this story in yesterday's Trib, I was left scratching my head as to how the police officer in this tragic incident could have made the scheduling error that caused the tickets to be dismissed. For those of you don't remember the names, this was the incident where a young woman was hit by two cars on Sheridan Road and killed.

I wanted to get a police perspective and asked a friend. He said that common practice to avoid what happened here is for the officer to set a court date within the required 60 days. If the only possible dates fall during the officer's vacation, that officer would designate one of those dates and contact the court to explain the situation and request a continuance, which is usually granted. He said that the dismissal of the tickets was unlikely to affect the family's civil case against the drivers.
