peace and quiet

An article in today's Sun-Times spells out some details of a new nighttime anti-noise ordinance that may give police more leverage to keep the peace. On the surface, it looks mostly good. However, unless there is some clause exempting businesses that existed long before nearby residential development (in areas such as Fulton Market), some of those businesses could be big losers under this law. It could end up costing a lot in terms of job loss in gentrifying areas. I'll be curious to see more details on this.

Much of our city laws become meaningless without enforcement (often good), so I wouldn't worry too much about the technical implications of this ordianance. However, I do hope we can get some enforcement for excessive honking and useless car alarms that wake me up at night in Lakeview.
